Taking time out to enjoy each others company in Tunbridge Wells

St Valentine's Day in Tunbridge Wells

St. Valentine’s Day, 14th February, the perfect excuse for a romantic holiday break!

It all started as an annual feast of ‘Courtly Love’ in the Middle Ages which encouraged nobility and chivalry. Where better place to pursue a modern extension of courtly love and chivalry than a romantic mini-break in Tunbridge Wells with its royal connections and romantic gardens?

Plan ahead for a Valentine break with a difference!

Show your partner your love by booking now so you don’t miss the best of what is on offer from the hotels, restaurants, spa breaks and other places to stay.

We have B&Bs for the snuggly home away from home feel; self-catering to provide some extra privacy and exclusive hotels for that special treat.

For options right amongst the historic conservation area of our Royal town, there are the centrally located Brick House B&B and Plaisance

For a country break, you can choose from a number of hotels all within just a 10 minute drive of the town.

Burrswood Guest House is a delightful estate amongst gorgeous gardens, a true relaxing retreat. The country house has lovely views and guests can take B&B, half board or full board as well as opt for a massage.

The Mercure Tunbridge Wells Hotel is located in the village of Pembury. A 4 star hotel built round a Georgian dower manor and oast, this venue offers you every comfort and convenience for a romantic break. Make sure to check out their special Valentines packages.

Salomons is a grand manor in Southborough, where you can lounge around the estate in some style. They often have a special Valentine's Day offer and there is the Bistro too.

Near the Pantiles and the swish High Street, is the brand new remodelled hotel, One Warwick Park.  This is a modern, slick place to stay with restaurant and cocktail bar.

There are many more choices in cottages and hotels where great deals can be had if you book soon.

Valentine Spa Breaks

For that luxurious edge why not try any one of six spas or beauty rooms in the area?  Self catering Granary Cottage has preferential rates for Knowle Grange Spa just outside of Tunbridge Wells.

Hotel du Vin & Bistro is top of the range and offers luxurious packages.  The Spa Hotel has its own Spa Spa treatment rooms to shower you with love and a special Valentines package!

Do book your treatments in advance so you can be assured your loved one is truly pampered. Don't forget the champagne breakfast!

Shopping for the perfect Valentine gift

Tunbridge Wells is the ideal getaway, only an hour from London with a genteel Georgian atmosphere, some very special galleries, florists, delicatessans and artisan chocolateries.

Harry Collins of G Collins & Sons Jewellers in the boutique-led High Street is by appointment to HM the Queen.  There are some other lovely jewellery shops in this area to ogle at.

For the man in your life, there are over 70 funky shops in Camden Road. Unusual speciality shops offering antiques, sculpture, paintings, bicycles, games, beer and outdoor pursuit gifts.

Romantic dinner for two?

Being such a foodie town, there is no shortage of wonderful restaurants in which to dine. The problem will be in the choosing so here are our tips.

For fine dining in the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, try the Old Fishmarket Champagne and Seafood Bar in the elegant Pantiles. Try the locally produced sparkling wine or cider from Chapel Down and Hush Heath Winery.

A mere 10 minute taxi ride away from the centre is The Twenty-Six in Southborough.  Scott Goss is the chef who is being talked about as one to watch by the industry.

Well-known and committed, Thackeray’s Restaurant is formidable.  This is a chance to sit where the famous writer once stayed in this ancient wooden building and dine on delicious French cuisine.

The new addition to the town is the famous brand, The Ivy, adding to the glamour of the High Street and enjoyed by Karen Millen amongst other discerning gourmands.

The Townhouse is a lively place to enjoy tapas, Spanish wine and beer. Coco Retro is an authentic French bistro near the High Street and The Warren is a quirky carnivorous feast just round the corner.

For dinner that won’t break the bank, enjoy simple pleasures like Sopranos (Spanish tapas), Alexandra's (Greek) or Il Vesuvio (Italian), all very welcoming and unpretentious.

For something different try Japanese restaurant Kitsu or Nepalese restaurant Manakamana Gurkha.

Kitsu “never fails to disappoint” continuously appearing in the top 10 Trip Advisor lists.

Manakamana Gurkha has been described as “mouthwatering” “beautifully cooked food” and “reasonably priced”.

Rural restaurants include The Vineyard at Lamberhurst, The Kentish Hare at Bidborough as well as The Poet at Matfield and The Great House at Hawkhurst.

These are all fantastic English, country gastropubs in cute villages serving really tasty locally produced food and drinks.

In Cranbrook, try Apicius, very intimate and exquisite - open only Thursday - Sunday. The small team serve a seasonal menu in the Mediterranean style.

Gardens of romance

Looking for something more peaceful? Romantic walks can be enjoyed in the picturesque countryside of the Garden of England.

Ensconced in the Weald of Kent you’re never far from an impressionistic landscape at this time of year or a quintessential English village with white clapboard cottages and Tudor beams.

If you want to make a big impression, visit one of the magnificent attractions. The ones that are open include Scotney Castle, Sissinghurst Castle Estate (not the gardens) and Penshurst Place. Don’t forget your camera!

St Valentine is also the patron saint of travelling, so take the plunge and book your own romantic custom mini-break. Get more ideas from our blogs, like 7 places to go for romantic meals - the locals’ recommendations. The Tourist Information Centre is here to help capture your magic memories as well so do get in touch for more inspiration.
