The rolling Wealden countryside lends itself to all sorts of different activities for the peaceable countryside admirer and the adrenaline fuelled visitor.

Wet or dry, you won’t be disappointed. Whether you’re looking to plan an activity break in Tunbridge Wells or just an activity for the day you’ll find a whole host of pursuits that you can get stuck into with family or friends.

Free things to do in Tunbridge Wells

Criss-crossed by a network of footpaths and longer walks such as the Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk and The Weald Way, ramblers will find lots to love and experience from the many walks in Tunbridge Wells.

Cycling, tramping, rambling or walking, perusing art galleries and museums are just a few of the fabulous free things to do in Tunbridge Wells, not to mention very popular.  You will see why when you visit as your sense of wonder and escapism will be thrilled by such exceptional views.

For one of the best we recommend cycling up a former Tour de France hill stage in Goudhurst as well as round Brenchley and Paddock Wood!

For playful rock climbing visit Wellington Rocks and have a go at clambering all over them, as many a Tunbridge Wellian child has before you!

Genteel pastimes

Apart from promenading on the Pantiles and watching the world go by, why not have play a round of golf?

A number of our golf courses welcome visitors and it is certainly a healthy way to enjoy the countryside with the 19th hole nearby to refuel.  Either next to town or in a remote rural village, you can improve your handicap and revel in some of the prettiest parts of the UK at the same time.

Fishing is also a popular hobby in the Tunbridge Wells region; some say the perfect serene get-away. Numerous lakes are open for coarse and fly fishing in quiet, timeless backwaters.

There are opportunities for gentle swimming indoors at one of the sports clubs, hotels or leisure centres.

Of course, visiting a Royal Spa town means there are deliciously luxurious ways to unwind here. The Spa page and Blog can give you the details on the best places to go.

For the Adrenaline Junkies...

There are a number of sports to get involved in in this area, just have a read through!

Rock climbing is a growing sport in these parts.  There are three places where you can go rock climbing: The Bowles Outdoor Centre, Chimera Climbing Centre and Harrisons Rocks.

Harrisons Rocks is a natural wonder in Tunbridge Wells, open to all and worth going just to look at although you can experience serious levels of ropework here.

Bewl Water, near Lamberhurst, the region’s largest lake, offers the perfect opportunity for water sports including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, fly-fishing and a 21km cycle route round the reservoir.

Bedgebury, near Goudhurst, is home to a beautiful forest of conifer trees, and a restful place to walk in all seasons. Come again and again to see the stunning colour changes throughout the year, especially round the lakes.

The two thousand acres of forest has enough room for family cycling and cycle hire, mountain biking, horse riding, walking, picnics and adventure playgrounds as well as ParkRun.  Dogs welcome too!

For the more adventurous, visitors can experience the award winning high-wire attraction Go-Ape, at Bedgebury. Go whizzing down the zip wires through the tree canopy just like in the Jungle Book. Suitable wires are set up for children.

The Bowles Centre has 2 dry ski slopes, canoeing trips as well as sandstone rock climbing. There are many other family-friendly activities too.  The nearby train station is Eridge – 40 minutes from London.

Train driving is many a boy’s dream. Dreams can come true with Spa Valley Railway in Tunbridge Wells.  Take a shunt along the line through the countryside and relish a train enthusiast’s paradise!

Winter Fun

Try your hand (err.. feet!) at ice skating from November to January in Calverley Grounds.

Make sure you book well in advance for the session of your choice; this gets more and more popular each year.

Surrounded by wooden chalets and cafés selling warming hot chocolate and homemade sausage rolls or gluhwein and bratwurst (or is it bockwurst or knockwurst…?!!), come and soak up the cosy festive atmosphere.

Curling is another increasingly popular sport and we are lucky enough to have the only curling rink in fair England - Fentons - right here in our borough.
