Groombridge Place and The Enchanted Forest

Groombridge Place near Tunbridge Wells promises a fun day out for all the family providing award winning gardens, Crusoe’s world, the Romany camp, the Raptor Centre (which is the biggest Birds of Prey conservation centre in the South East), the Enchanted Forest - with its giant tree swings! - and other thrilling things to discover.

Groombridge Estate can be found near the historic village of Groombridge and boasts a complex and fascinating history itself.

Groombridge Manor House

The manor house itself was rebuilt in 1662 under the rule of Charles II to replace a medieval building that can be traced back to 1230. Its architect was Sir Christopher Wren one of the most highly acclaimed English designers in architectural history, with designs that include St Pauls Cathedral after its destruction in the Great Fire of London, along with many other parts of the city.

Groombridge Manor House was then built by Philip Packer who was a member of the Royal court.

Both before and after this rebuilding  Groombridge Place housed many significant and influential figures, however, perhaps the most famous resident at Groombridge Place was Thomas Sackville cousin to Elizabeth I and Lord Treasurer in her government from 1599 to 1608.

Groombridge Gardens

Although it’s compelling and spellbinding history is enough to justify a visit to Groombridge Estate, the 200 acres that surround the manor holds a number of award wining gardens that are perfect to wander through on a weekend afternoon. These include The Knot Garden, The Secret Garden, The White Rose Garden, The Oriental Garden, The Drunken Garden and Draughtsman’s Lawn.

The layout of these gardens was conceived in 1670 by the builder of the manor Philip Packer, a layout that has been maintained through the years meaning that modern technology and day to day stresses ebb away as you walk through the timeless and tranquil spaces.

The Enchanted Forest

The vast lands that contribute to the Groombridge Estate also include The Enchanted Forest. Fantastic for family days out children and adults alike will be enthralled by the magical woodland that conceals adventures and games waiting in every clearing and corner.

The Treetops Walkway is a mindboggling 350m long and 20m high above the forest floor. Experience something mesmerising and magical as you ascend the walkway up into the tree canopy of the huge Oak, Pine, Beech and Chestnut trees which make up this ancient forest.

Sherlock Holmes Museum

For the budding sleuths among us the Sherlock Holmes museum always excites. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle frequented the Groombridge Estate appreciating the beautiful architecture and landscape hailing it to be the “very essence of England’, even using it as the setting of a Sherlock Holmes story, The Valley of Fear.

So arrive armed with your magnifying glasses and get ready to become part of the mystery in the museum that displays artefacts from the life of the renowned writer.

The Peacock Bistro serves delicious lunches and cream teas along with a well stocked gift shop.
