Parks & Lakes in Tunbridge Wells

Visitors delight at the greenery of the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

The secret is the award winning parks, woods and commons

Top picnics spots in Tunbridge Wells

The beautiful Calverley Grounds in the town centre is hidden behind the tall mid-Victorian era shops and restaurants of Mount Pleasant Road and the magnificent Great Hall.

Locals use this formal landscaped park for meeting friends, lunchtime picnics and tennis as well as eating al fresco at the café.

Awarded a Green Flag for its cleanliness and sustainably well-maintained look, this is a neat little place to take a break in the town. Read more about its history.

Calverley Grounds is the venue for a number of events throughout the year including music festivals and a hugely popular ice rink at Christmas.

Dunorlan Park, a pleasant walk of 20 minutes from the centre, has a boating lake and café with wide grassy lawns and meadows for lazy days.

Ranked as the number 1 thing to do on TripAdvisor as “well worth a visit for a relaxing afternoon”, and a Green Flag winner too, this is one of the best parks in the Tunbridge Wells area and even better, it is free to park and enter.

Take a longer 1.6 mile walk to admire the views of the Weald and explore corners of almost 80 acres of parkland. There is plenty of open space for lots of fun and games.

In terms of entertainment for kids, many of the parks in the Tunbridge Wells area have an assortment of children’s playgrounds and activities.

There is play equipment at our oldest public park The Grove (near the High Street and a winner of a Green Flag), at Grosvenor & Hilbert Park, Pennington Grounds, Cranbrook, Paddock Wood, and Hawkenbury Recreation Ground to name a few.

These make good little stop offs for pent up bundles of energy and a picnic.

The Tunbridge Wells Rocky Show

The town of Royal Tunbridge Wells is slightly unusual as it is situated on sandstone which gives rise to some towering rocks actually in and within a stone’s throw of the town!

Come admire and enjoy some rock scrambling or perhaps take some arty peekaboo photos of your own.

Fantastically fun places to visit, play and picnic around for a couple of hours at least.

Read the Rocks pages to uncover more about these various rocky sites.

Lakes around Tunbridge Wells

Naturally water is a starring component of the Tunbridge Wells lure.

Wetlands in the nature reserves and fishing lakes are easily found for hypnotic holiday breaks.

In the wider borough of Tunbridge Wells, lakes are to be admired in the historic gardens of the stately homes and castles.

Scotney Castle has a moat beneath the 14th century fortress capturing enrapturing reflections of times of yore.

You can enjoy such watery activities from feeding the ducks to sailing your own vessel at Dunorlan Park and Grosvenor & Hilbert Park as well as other exciting watersports at Bewl Water.

There is the option of a leisurely boat trip navigating Bewl Water, viewing the woodlands from the deck whilst someone else takes the helm. A short river boat trip is available at Groombridge Place from the gardens to the Enchanted Forest.
